Approaches to Learning
At Wavertree CE School, we are proud to work in close collaboration with the Rainbow Education Multi Academy Trust; as such, we have adopted The Rainbow Pedagogy Blueprint, a visionary framework that derives directly from the evidence-based principles of Barak Rosenshine.
Cognition, Metacognition, and Professional Development
We believe that teachers should be equipped to fulfil their role to a high professional standard. To do this, our curriculum and pedagogical approaches are research-based, focusing on strategies that fit seamlessly with a cognitive model of learning. Teachers are supported by providing the tools, resources, and professional development that will improve their practice and enhance their performance, so that the pupils in our care are taught effectively.
-
The Science of Learning: Over the past few years, our professional development has focused heavily on teachers’ understanding of a cognitive model based on the science of learning. From this foundation, we have adopted general pedagogical practices that aid quality first teaching and support pupils’ long-term retention of knowledge.
-
Consistency and Collaboration: We have chosen subject-specific approaches and resources that operate within this model so that classroom practice is built on the same core principles. This helps us develop strong consistency within and across our trust schools, supporting teachers through ongoing professional dialogue and shared growth.
-
Mastery Teaching, Marking, and Formative Assessment: Principles of cognition and metacognition also underpin our marking policy. Formative assessment is a central focus of classroom practice within an overarching model of mastery teaching. Our aim is for pupil understanding to be built upon solid foundations, with errors and misconceptions tackled live as they happen in the classroom—which also supports teachers with respect to manageable marking workloads.
Rooted in research and driven by a shared cognitive model, we ensure every child builds secure foundations and a lifelong love of learning.
