Science

We value science as a core subject and want our pupils to learn key scientific vocabulary and knowledge – as well as the skills for scientific working. However, research in cognitive science tells us that knowledge is key to learning and that pupils can’t problem-solve ‘like a scientist’ until they have the domain knowledge to do so – so this is our priority.

At Wavertree CE School, we want every child to explore the wonders of the world around them like true scientists. Across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, our science curriculum is carefully designed to help children build their understanding step-by-step, ensuring every lesson connects to what they already know and builds secure foundations for the future.

To help children know and remember more, we break learning down into manageable small steps, beginning every lesson with a quick, fun recap of prior knowledge. We place equal importance on helping children understand scientific facts (substantive knowledge) and teaching them how to investigate and think scientifically (disciplinary knowledge).

To make learning clear and engaging for every child:

  • Key Knowledge Made Clear: We use concise knowledge organisers and clear end goals so children always know what core concepts they are focusing on.

  • Vocabulary in Action: New scientific words are explicitly taught in every lesson and proudly displayed on our classroom working walls.

  • Tailored Support: Lessons are thoughtfully adapted to meet the individual needs of our learners, ensuring everyone is supported and challenged to succeed.

Through hands-on experiments, exciting investigations, and careful guidance, we inspire our pupils to ask big questions, test their ideas, and grow into confident, curious scientists.
