Design Technology

Design and Technology are all around us. Almost everything we interact with has been designed, developed or manufactured by people: from the buildings we live in and the products we use, to the food we eat, the clothes we wear and the technology that connects us. At Wavertree CE School, we want children to begin to understand this designed world and recognise themselves as people who can contribute to it.

Our DT curriculum therefore develops both thinking and making. Children learn how materials, structures, mechanisms, systems and ingredients work, and use this knowledge to create, evaluate and refine their own solutions. We place value on children understanding why something works, not simply following a set of instructions to produce an end product.

Through DT, pupils develop the vocabulary, knowledge and practical skills to become thoughtful designers and makers. They learn that successful design often involves experimenting, solving problems, making mistakes and improving ideas through continuous evaluation. In this way, DT provides children with the knowledge and confidence to understand, question and shape the world around them.
